1990

  • Announcement of double-tracking and electrification of the KTM network spanning Rawang, Sentul, Seremban and Port Klang

1991

  • Hunslet TPL of the UK won the contract to supply 18 3-car Electric Multiple Units (EMUs) for use on KTMB’s soon-to-be electrified double track network in the Klang Valley area. Hunslet TPL would ultimately surrender the work to Jenbacher Transport Systems of Austria.

1992

  • 20 June 1992 – Ekspres Rakyat no. 1 dn from Butterworth to Singapore derailed at KM 361 near Kuang, Selangor. One passenger died

1993

  • 11 July 1993 Night Mail 60up from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur being worked by 22109 collided head on with down freight train worked by 22108 in Rembau, Negeri Sembilan during the early hours of the morning

1994

  • 29 May 1994 – Ekspres Langkawi no. 8up from Kuala Lumpur to Padang Besar derailed at KM 221 near Bidor, Perak, after hitting the rear of a stationary freight train which was fouling the mainline
  • 1 June 1994 – Ekspres Langkawi services extended to Haadyai in Thailand from Padang Besar in Perlis

1995

  • Launch of the KTM Komuter electric commuter train services first between Kuala Lumpur and Rawang before being expanded elsewhere within the newly electrified Klang Valley double track network

1996

  • 9 December 1996 the Westport extension of the Port Klang branch opened to traffic
  • Arrival of 22 units 3-car EMUs (Class 82) from South Africa manufactured by Union Carriage and Wagon for use of KTM Komuter services

1997

  • Arrival of 22 units of 3-car EMUs (Class 83) from South Korea manufactured by Hyundai Heavy Industries for use of KTM Komuter services

1998

  • Collision between EMU 50 and EMU 34 at the Kuala Lumpur station which saw both EMUs out of action for sometime. EMU 34 was eventually scrapped/
